Shark cage diving is something I have longed to do since I was three years old.
We got up at 4:30 in the morning to be at the marina by 7:45. We met Captain Vinny, First Mate Eric, our two travel companions, signed papers, and headed to the boat. We settled down on big bean bags for the 1 1/2 hour trip that took us 34 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha’s Vineyard.
The water was gorgeous.
By 10AM, the crew began to chum the water with mackerel. It left a noticeable slick in the water that extended a surprisingly long way out. Gulls, Wilson’s Storm Petrels, and Great Sheerwaters were attracted almost immediately. About 1 hour and 15 minutes later the first shark arrived, a gorgeous and lively Mako. It breached two times which in and of itself was amazing to watch. The captain told me to quickly get in the cage because a lot of times Makos won’t stick around.
When I got in, I kept gasping for breath because the water was so cold. The Mako swam underneath me. A few minutes after that, a blue shark came by us after it was done biting the fish. It was so gorgeous and curious. Quite a few blue sharks came up to us after that. One was hooked and still had a line dangling from it from what was probably a previous catch and release. The crew tried to help it but it wouldn’t cooperate.
It was an amazing trip! It was the first day of my Sophomore year of high school and an early 16th birthday present. Thank you to the two men who also shared this experience with us. Thank you, Captain Vinny and First Mate Eric of Bounty Hunter Shark Adventures for a great day! Being in the water with animals I have loved and studied since I was three was so amazing.
